News: ALF Annual Seminar: The Environment and International Law

AMSTERDAM LAW FORUM - ANNUAL SEMINAR: THE ENVIRONMENT AND INTERNATIONAL LAW

What environmental challenges does the world face today? How can (international) law and policy react to these challenges? What types of environmental crimes are there, and how can these be countered? Should ecocide become an international crime, and what would ecocide then entail?

During ALF's annual seminar 2017 these questions and more will be discussed in two moderated panel discussions including a range of professionals from the field, specialised in these topics from multiple disciplines.

Panel 1 on 'Environmental Crimes and Ecocide' contains representatives from the Coalition for the International Criminal Court, the Advisory Committee to the Monsanto Tribunal and an Assistant Professor from KU Leuven. This panel shall discuss environmental crimes, challenges for prevention and prosecution and ecocide.

Panel 2 on 'Climate Change and Sustainability' contains representatives from Greenpeace, Urgenda Foundation and JustLaw. This panel shall discuss climate change and sustainability challenges and reactions from legal and policy perspectives.

The student pitch panel contains a number of students from various disciplines who have written a paper or thesis on a topic related to the seminar.

The panels will be moderated by Professor Wim Huisman, professor of criminology at the Vrije Univerisiteit Amsterdam. Dr. Huisman is specialised, among others, in white-collar crime, corporate involvement in international crimes and environmental crimes.
